Tools for designing safer driving experiences

I worked on foundational research around distraction that investigates causes of in-app distraction and associated solutions. I was a researcher and advised on design. I worked with data scientists, multiple design teams, design engineers, legal, and policy folks.

Context

While there is existing research on distraction, as there is for phone use while driving, there is very limited research investigating distraction specific to ride-share. Distracted driving threatens the safety of both drivers and riders.

Problem

With all the distraction factors that come into play when driving a vehicle, how do we ensure we are not adding distractions to an earners experience?

Solution

Create futures not features: Evolve Uber’s design process to anticipate for distraction by establishing ownership and accountability in the organization. I along with another designer wrote design guidelines for the organization. We are in the process of integrating changes to our design system. We also collaborated with design engineers to create a Figma plugin that detects distraction prone designs.

Due to the level of sensitivity around this project I can not share insights or data around my research at this time.
